Nice, but heavy. Switch seems a little awkward to use. Oct 29, 2009
By S. Lilley I first purchased the Duracell Daylite AA and CR123 versions, and was so impressed with their brightness and build-quality that I decided to take a chance on the D version, even though there were no reviews yet.
It arrived yesterday. It works well. Heavy metallic case. The on-off switch seems a little more awkward to use on this than it does on the smaller Daylites. Imho, on a flashlight of this size/weight, it would have been better if it had the on-off switch in the standard position.
I got this double D version for the extra runtime from the bigger batteries. If I had to do it all over again, I'd probably get the version with the double C batteries instead, because it's quite a bit lighter.

Fantastic light Mar 15, 2010

Fantastic light. Feels surprisingly durable and solid in your hand.
The spotlight and flood adjustment are minor, offering very little change to the actual beam. If this is critical to you, you may want to look for another light. I find it mostly unnecessary since the beam has both a bright center and an adequate halo.
I own several flashlights, and I believe this to be perhaps the finest flashlight I have seen at this price point. Are there better lights out there? Certainly. But nothing that even competes at this price level. For the money, this is literally a standout product.

Great flashlight for the money Jul 03, 2010

I've been very satisfied with this flashlight build quality and light output. It has a lot more apparent brightness then the Maglite I bought a few years ago that is also LED. I would put the quality of this flash light on par with a Maglite brand.

poor off-on switch Jan 22, 2010
By E. Musser Off-on button is on bottom of the flashlight requiring 2 hands to use, a most inconvenient thing to do when you are working. I would return it except, since it is open now, I would recover little of my expense. The light function seems to be very good.

Great flashlight with one condition Dec 22, 2011
By greg This has some of the best optics I have seen on a flashlight and it's bright. I'm a bit of a flashlight collector, owning 2,3,4, & 6 cell mag lights, rechargeable mag, AA lights, 6 or 7 different head lamps, multiple LED lights, and the Duracells Daylight 160 Lumen 2- CR123 battery flashlight. Right now this is my brightest working flashlight (no battery for the rechargealbe mag).
The big disadvantage of this light is the pushbutton switch on the end of the light. It's one handed if you are holding the light with a verticle forearm using your thumb to control the switch, something that feels very natural with the small CR123 driven light, though not as natural with this heavier 2D version. I wish the button would have been on the barrel like the Mag's.
Duracell did a great job with the optics on the Daylite line. In about a smooth 1/4 turn of the lense piece the beam goes from point to wide. As the beam enlarges the intensity drops, but the spot of light still has an even brightness distribution unlike my mag lights, with normal or LED bulbs.
I compared this flashlight to my 3D cell mag with their LED bulb. The Duracell was significantly brighter when the beam diameter was the same shined on trees 175' from my porch. The Mag light was able to focus to a smaller diameter beam than the duracell that may have been a little brighter than the duracell when at it's narrowest, but the beam was so narrow it wasn't very useful for scanning or identifying what you were looking at. When the mag beam was adjusted larger to match the duracell (which was still a tight beam) the mag did not have an even distribution of light. The duracell diameter was large enough to allow easy identification and tracking of animals, intruders approaching or fleeing your location, a car, etc.
I also compared this duracell to my 2-cr123 6VDC daylite flashlight. They are similar in design, though the reflector is smaller on the CR123 light. The two lights appeared to have similar brightness (they are both rated for the same lumens) but the beam in the 2D version could be adjusted to a smaller diameter, so the larger diameter reflector on the 2D flashlight does help with the optics and focusing.
I haven't had a chance to compare it to my 500,000 candle power spot, but they really aren't designed for similar uses. My rechargeable mag would be an interesting comparison too, but my battery pack is shot and I haven't replaced it yet.
I haven't owned the light long enough to comment on durability, but I've had the CR123 light for 6-12 months. I really enjoy the great brightness in such a small package so I carry it around frequently in my pocket, sometimes with keys, etc. The finish is starting to show signs of wear, and the lense has scratches and visible marks, but it's still bright and I haven't had any problems with the switch. It's been a durable flashlight and I expect the same with this light. I think the switch will be the weakest link. Time will tell.
