Mechanically it may be Indestructible, but Electrically it is DESPICABLE! Dec 27, 2011
By NLee the Engineer As a general rule, I prefer LED flashlights powered by 2x AA cells over those that use 3x AAA cells. This is because: - AAA cell contains only 1/3 the energy of AA cell, yet they cost the same to buy. So when using 3x AAA cells instead of 2x AA cells, you pay 50% more for batteries but only get half the runtime. - A cheaply-made 3x AAA LED flashlight typically drives its LED directly from the batteries, with just a current-limiting resistor in series. The result is unregulated LED brightness and poor battery utilization.
When I saw this Rayovac DIY3AAA-B Indestructible 3 AAA Flashlight on sale at a local hardware store, however, my curiosity got the better of me. The unit claims to be 'Indestructible', and it does have a very heavy-duty, rugged body. Its specifications are also impressive: 120 lumens light output and 5 hours runtime. That's why I just have to try it out.
My initial impression of this Rayovac LED flashlight is very positive. It produces a powerful, well-focused beam that is significantly brighter than my old 2-AA Cell Mini-Maglite LED Flashlight, which claims just 69 lumens of light output. On the other hand, I can't believe that any LED flashlight can sustain 120 lumens for 5 hours, when powered by just three AAA alkaline cells. Therefore I need to find out how the power consumption (hence LED brightness) varies with respect to battery voltage.
As it turns out, the Rayovac DIY3AAA-B, just like other cheaply made 3xAAA LED flashlights, contains no power regulators at all. The LED current is completely at the mercy of the battery's voltage and internal resistance. When powered by a set of fresh alkaline cells, the LED consumes about 2.5W initially, which accounts for the claim of '120 lumens'. But as the battery voltage decreases, the LED power (hence brightness) starts to drop rapidly. The 'low power' mode is cheaply implemented, by inserting a 27-ohm resistor in series with the LED. See my uploaded chart in 'Customer Images' section for details.
When powered by a set of freshly charged Sanyo eneloop AAA batteries, the Rayovac flashlight operates at around 1.5W power initially. It can achieve about three hours of runtime, before its light output drops below that of a Rayovac 1W LED Flashlight used for reference. Note that under heavy load, rechargeable AAA cells can deliver more energy than alkaine cells. So the manufacturer's claim of '5 hours' runtime is probably defined as the time for LED brightness to drop to 10% of its initial value.
To be fair, the Rayovac DIY3AAA-B is quite impressive in terms of mechanical construction and beam brightness (at least when using fresh alkaline batteries). But I am extremely disappointed that Rayovac adopted such a cheap electrical design without any power regulation. It is still an 'Okay' product considering its low price, that's why I have to give it a neutral (3-star) rating.

Rayovac Indestructible 3aaa - Great Light !! Jul 24, 2011
By BigDave69 I've had my Rayovac Indestructible for 3 days now . Been showing it to my friends by tossing it to them , and purposely throwing it short so it crashes to the floor ! Hasn't hurt the light a bit , but it's cool to see the expressions on their faces ! I would rate this light very highly as far as the brightness , at 120 lumens . The "energy saver" mode is great for saving the battery when you don't need as bright a light . The construction seems to be first rate , and the light feels very "solid" in your hand ; not to heavy , but certainly not flimsy ! It's a good looking light , too , with a definite "tactical" look .I've owned several Rayovacs over the years and have always found them to be a great value for the money . Had a chrome Sportsman , back in the day , that lasted 20 years , until I managed to lose it ! Currently have a 3 watt Sportsman Extreme that's been my reliable companion for the last 4 years . Only things missing are a momentary on/off feature , and a lanyard , which is pretty easy to make yourself . That's the only reason for less than 5 stars . Actually planned on giving it 4 1/2 but couldn't figure out how to do it ! ;p

Nice little flashlight Dec 23, 2011
By AnObservation I like that it has weight and two levels of brightness, is small and seems to be sturdy. Bright level is quite bright and lower level is about what a normal flashlight of this size would give you. I have not used it long enough to comment on battery life which was one concern when I purchased it. But so far I am very pleased that it does as expected very well and seems well made.

Cute little Flashlight Dec 03, 2011
By Evey I received this in less this 24 hours after placing my order. Amazing how fast they delivered it and the flashlight is a nice heavy duty little thing. If you are looking for something small that you can keep in your car or around the house this is perfect, but if you are looking for a regular size flashlight or something big I would not recommend this one.
This flashlight is small but its very bright and pretty strong and seems like it would last a long time.

Good as I realistically hoped for. Mar 02, 2012
By Sharon Kramer Had the light 2 weeks now and use it daily on my farm. I've got big supper bright lights with long run times which are great when doing a major repair on equipment that will last all night. But you have to know in advance when you will need them and go out of your way to make sure you lug them along with you to the scheduled intended project. My problem is life doesn't give me too many scheduled intended projects as compared with unexpected urgencies that must be dealt with here and now. Here is where the Rayovac shines(literally...PUN FULLY INTENDED). Its small so its easy to keep in the truck, the night stand by my bed, one in my tool box etc. Its fantastic for all the unexpected's life seems so determined to repeatedly keep throwing at me. dam if I know why...
#1 durability: I don't have much use for a light that breaks each 30 days and needs replacing. I suspect I will have the Rayovacs until I loose them or theft borrows them and forgets to return them, which is my preferred method over ceasing to function at exactly the most inopportune time.
#2 If its not small enough, it cant be with me all the time to protect me from life's unexpected's. The Rayovac has a great small size without being too small so that its convincing you its flimsy. It feels very durable with great rubber gripping where you need it and just heavy enough so it feels like a valuable tool.
#3 It has a fantastic brightness for its size. I love the high-medium brightness capability and split my use between the two of them. Its easy to know when I can stretch the batteries and don't need full blast light. With it I can identify a person coming out of my woods into the field at 500 feet away. VERY IMPRESSIVE.
Those are the features that I value in the Indestructible. I don't consider two hours of very bright runtime to be too much of a sacrifice for this light and don't mind swapping out batteries once a month for its angelic convenience it gives to me. I would rather swap batteries than suffer thru a dim light nightmare.
